Vincent Serneels

Vincent Serneels is full professor of archaeometry at the Department of Geosciences of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. After graduating in Earth Sciences at the University of Lausanne, his Ph.D. (1993) explored the archaeology and petrology of iron smelting and smithing slag in Switzerland. For 30 years, his research has focused on ancient iron production in Europe and Africa. His interests cover the production and use of other mineral resources, like metals, stones, pigments, ceramics, and glasses. He combines archaeological fieldwork and material sciences approaches for the study of ancient technology and economy.
