Jane Whitehead has been the founding editor of two publications focused on the Etruscans: Etruscan Studies, the journal of the Etruscan Foundation, from 1984 to 2000, and Etruscan News, the newsletter of the U.S. section of the Istituto di Studi Etruschi ed Italici, from 2002 until the present. She directed the excavation of the Etruscan site of La Piana from 1982 to 2001 and since 2004 has been excavating the baths at the Roman city of Carsulae, founded on the Via Flaminia in Umbria. She received her B.A. from Wellesley College, an M.A. in Latin from Trinity College, and a Ph.D. in classical languages and literatures from Yale University. She is professor of Latin and French at Valdosta State University.
